M/V HOLTEFJELL / JXZR
M/V HOLTEFJELL / JXZR bound for Cape Town, 1967. The picture was taken from S/S Mormacmail.

With another long and excellent research of Mr. Jesper Brix, one more unknown ship has come to light some forty two years later. The above picture was taken by Erdem Yurtseven from s/s Mormacmail in South African waters.
We thank Mr. Brix very much for his patience in tracing the hints and for sharing the results with us !

" On your web site there is a photo of an unknown ship, Ore tanker bound for Cape Town, 1967. I think this photo is of the Norwegian bulk carrier, " Holtefjell " of Olsen & Ugelstad in Oslo. A photo of the ship and her details are available via http://www.lardex.net/oslo/olsenuglestad/skipstekst/1965Holtefjell.htm In 1967, Olsen & Ugelstad owned two more similar sized bulk carriers, " Norefjell " and " Sognefjell ". You can also view them via http://www.lardex.net/ - just follow - Rederier - Oslo - 337 Olsen & Ugelstad - Skipsliste - and scroll down to 1966 and 1967. To me " Holtefjell " seems a better match than the two latter ones. I hope the links are working and the information is of interest to your web site.

Readers may also take a look at this unidentified tanker's picture taken in 1970 from S/T Gulf Jaguar, sailing US East Coast. The ship at the horizon looks like a Lykes steamer. If you can identify the tanker please send a message to webmaster.

And the answer to our above quest came from Mr. Mueller-Debus. We thank him very much and quote his e-mail below :

"... The mystery tanker definitely appears to be a Cities Service - owned, slightly jumboized US T-2 tanker, and my guess is that it is the CANTIGNY, blt. in 1945, as the name is rather short and this ship retained the original T-2 tanker smokestack. Please compare with an archive pic of the CANTIGNY which I attach. Otherwise it could also be a sistership, owned by the same steamship company, the COUNCIL GROVE, also blt. in 1945 and jumboized the same way, but acc. to the two archive pics of her that I add, one can see that the smokestack of the Council Grove was modified - and it was already modified b e f o r e the vessel was jumboized.... Without doubt the vessel in the background is a Lykes Lines vessel of the WW II-Standard - C 2 SA-J1/5 type. As Lykes operated a bigger number of these vessels it might not be possible to precisely identify this ship. Let me just add a photograph of one of these vessels as a reference, the KENNETH McKAY (45), which I took as the ship left Bremen (Germany) in 9-67.
Best regards,
Gerhard Mueller-Debus"
