HOWELL LYKES (Blt. 1940), the C-3 vessel that collided with the Turkish passenger vessel M/V Izmir in 1957, Mr. Mueller-Debus remembers " that incident quite well - especially with regard to the "prudent reaction" of the US captain, which was specially mentioned in the international press coverage, because he left the bow of the Howell Lykes sticking in the Turkish vessel's side and then pushed the passenger vessel slowly to a shallow place where the ship finally settled - to successfully prevent her from sinking."
