| Erdem Yurtseven in the radio room of s/s Mustafa . Foreign trip to U.K. and Sweden - 1954 |
|
| The radio equipment seen in the picture : starting from left is the goniometer with round dial, connected to the direction finder receiver at the corner ( Marconi 579 ). Next is the main receiver ( Marconi CR-300), then partially seen device may be the emergency receiver. In front of the receivers, reached by the operator is a straight Morse key. Transmitters are not seen in the picture, but from the rest of the rig, it seems probable to have an Oceanspan as the main one,for medium and high CW (telegraph only) frequencies. |

| s/s Mustafa was built in 1923, she was 4,184 grt. Her former name was Pendeen. She was purchased by the Turkish owners Sadıkzade Ruşen Oğulları in 1954, was scrapped in the early 1960s. She was replaced by a newer ( 1946 bt. )ship in 1962, always named Mustafa and carrying the same call sign TCVM. |

| Copies of few telegrams survived from the radio room of s/s Mustafa, two of which are posted below. Here are some details we gather from those messages that bring us back half a century old memories: |

Looking at the above excerpt of the voyage , not only we see two gales in one week, low speeds and towing of an old lady for repairs but may be more importantly for the young sailors who wanted to see the world, incredibly long port times ; twenty days in Avonmouth, another twenty in Liverpool ! |

| GLD - Land's End Radio thru which the above message was sent, had terminated Morse communications by the end of 1990s, like Porthishead Radio and many other coast stations around the world. |

| Here is how the above text reads : " MAIN LOWER BEARING BROKE AS THE SHAFT DROPPED FROM ITS LINING STOP SHAFT AND CRANK BEARINGS OVERHEATED BECAUSE OF THRUST BEARING METAL WEAR COULD NOT CONTINUE SAILING UNDER CIRCUMSTANCES ANCHORED DUNGENESS 12:00 STOP CABLED ALDORA " |

Handwritten notes tell that the message was relayed charge free ( QSP ) by TCGF to TCR and from there to the final destination TAH. TCGF was the call sign of S/S ÖDEMİŞ, TCR was the private radio station of Turkish Maritime Bank and Turkish Cargo Lines and TAH is the call sign of Istanbul Radio, still active in modes other than Morse. In parallel to technological developments the relay activity between ship and coast stations would be used less frequently in later years. From the frequency used between the two ships we understand that they were close to each other,hences/s Ödemiş, at the time might be within a 100 miles radius of Dover. |
